The Colorado Department of Education announced today the statewide pupil count for the 2011-2012 school year increased by 10,949 over the previous year, bringing the total to 854,265 public school students.

eDUCATION nEWS Colorado published the following article in Tuesday Churn
State Board of Education Chair Bob Schaffer will help kick off National School Choice Week tonight in Castle Rock, one of 50 events organized across the country this week. Tonight’s event will include Schaffer, a former U.S. congressman, along with political commentators Dick Morris and Hugh Hewitt. It’s backed by Americans for Prosperity Foundation-Colorado and 710 KNUS.
“It’s time to put children first in the education policy debate, not the adults and not the unions,” Jeff Crank, AFP Foundation-Colorado State Director, said in a news release.

“The budget cuts over the last few years have no doubt had a great impact on the district. Borman said D-38 is in its fourth year of pay freezes, training budgets have been cut dramatically, the number of instructional coaches have been decreased, and there has been a reduction of teachers and an increase in class sizes by two to three students per class.”

The Lone Tree Voice online site published information on a Survey of Education Personnel in Douglas County.
The Douglas County Federation on Jan. 17 presented the results of an independent survey that showed only 14 percent of Douglas County School District teachers believe the district is headed in the right direction. The survey results were shared at a school board meeting where board members heard feedback from parents, students and teachers concerned about the district’s performance.

Bill would eliminate some state tests

Rep. Judy Solano’s promised testing measure was introduced Tuesday, setting the stage for what’s expected to a lively debate this session over the extent and funding of the statewide achievement tests that will replace the CSAPs.
Testing costs also came up during a 90-minute meeting at which Department of Education executives finished answering Joint Budget Committee questions about 2012-13 school spending.

eDUCATION nEWS Colordo publishes state data on Schools and Districts for 2011
State officials on Dec. 6 released the second annual ratings for more than 1,600 schools under the Education Accountability Act of 2009.
Ratings possible are Performance, Improvement, Priority Improvement and Turnaround. This year, 69.5% of schools received the highest Performance rating, 18.3% were rated Improvement, 8.9% were Priority Improvement and 3.3% received the lowest rating of Turnaround.
This year’s ratings system includes alternative schools or alternative education campuses. To learn more about the state system, see this EdNews’ story.

Colorado State Board of Education Member Angelika Schroeder has been selected to serve on a year-long National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) study group looking at the role of technology in schools and communities. The group will also examine the compound issues surrounding the ever-expanding use of digital technology in K-12 education.
