The winner is Bear Creek Elementary School.

That’s the name that students chose for Creekside Middle School next year, and the Lewis-Palmer School District 38 board on Thursday approved it.

It’s a bit confusing, so, um, bear with us.

District 38 is closing Gace Best Elementary School and converting Creekside into an elementary school to accommodate those students.

A committee asked parents, teachers and students to suggest names. The favorites were: Fox Trails and Bear Creek. Bear Creek was especially liked because it takes into account Creekside, and also the Grace Best mascot, the Bears.

Board members Mark Pfoff and Jeff Ferguson voted against the name change.

“The school is already known as Creekside and it’s on Creekside Drive. It has a legacy,” Pfoff said. He pointed out the district could have simply changed “middle” to “elementary.”

A new sign must be created for the school, but letterheads are usually reprinted every year, so the change won’t waste paper, he said.

The changes will help the district slash $3 million from the $39 million 2010-2011 school year budget. Sixth grade will be part of district grade schools now, and middle school will be only seventh and eighth grades. The cuts were made because of enrollment drops and reduced state funding.

Grace Best will be closed at the end of the year because more than $3 million in renovations are needed, although the newer section, including the gym, will be sued for school and community events and rentals. Located at 66 Jefferson St. in Monument, the school has had a 52-year history.

Grace Best, an author and first grade teacher in the district for 24 years, died in 1995. She wrote a series about Jeremiah Mouse, which chronicled her hero’s adventures in the Tri-Lakes area.
