Monument Academy – Board Decision on Chartering Authority

April 30, 2010

Discussion regarding Monument Academy chartering request – After lengthy discussion, the Board members denied Monument Academy’s request for a letter granting permission for them to apply to the Colorado Charter School Institute. Many factors were considered, including: the Board’s responsibility for the education of all students in the District; the belief that D38 can provide quality oversight of the charter school; provision for special education, ELL (English Language Learners) and other student services; and, consideration of financial ramifications for both MA and D38 as a whole. The Board was also concerned how the move to CSI might affect the District’s Exclusive Chartering Authority. It was decided the Board would continue discussions and potential negotiations with MA during the coming months, before the current contract with D38 expires in June 2011.
